I’ve been a university professor for over 15 years, and I’ve been fortunate to have been recognized with various awards for my work as a teacher. I now find myself mentoring new faculty members and helping secondary teachers further develop their pedagogical skills. When I’m asked what leads to success in the classroom, I often share the well-worn axiom that good teachers do two things: They care passionately about the subject they teach, and they care deeply about their students as human beings.

When I go to Jen Shelton’s yoga classes, I get to see a great teacher at work. She is unbelievably knowledgeable about yoga (all 5,000 postures!) and can explain/demonstrate an individual posture in dozens of ways until it finally makes sense to everyone in the class. And Jen has an incredibly keen eye and a huge heart. She is able to track all her students and where we are in our own practices —when and how we need to challenge ourselves, when we need to just breathe; who has been spending hours in front of a computer at work and needs to stretch their wrists and neck, who has a big race coming up and needs to stretch their hip flexors.

With her passion for yoga and her commitment to her students, Jen is truly a master teacher. Indeed, when I’m in front of my own classes, I now often find myself thinking, “WWJD: What would Jen do?”
